Wedge

From The Othello Wiki Book Project

A wedge is an edge configuration where a disk (or disks) of one colour are in contact with disks of the opposite colour on either side.

The inside colour is said to have wedged the outside colour.

Some examples of wedges:

Image:Wedge_2.JPG Image:Wedge_4.JPG Image:Wedge_6.PNG White has wedged Black
Image:Wedge_7.PNG Both colours are wedging each other

Because they are enclosed on both sides, the inside disk(s) cannot be flipped by the opponent.

If the inside colour flips the opponent's disks to remove the wedge, the edge has become unwedged.
