Talk:Main Page

From The Othello Wiki Book Project

Main page suggestions: Change "Japanese" in "Asian" and include in that page links to tournament results of the Asian tournaments? Wanted to ask this first, before starting to mess up things :) Tom Schotte 13:10, 10 June 2008 (MET)

Good suggestion; I can do it this night because I am busy actually. But you have access to the whole wiki and can edit by yourself; the main page is a little bit complicated to modify because need translation in the other languages; I often use google translator and suggest you to translate the same way. Andriani 13:34, 10 June 2008 (MET)

I know I have access, but I wanted to verify whether or not it was a good idea :) Tom Schotte 13:51, 10 June 2008 (MET)

Main page suggestions: put a link to the glossary on it, under "about"? Also there's a typo: it's spelt "address" not "adress". ~ Lark ascending 10:58, 27 Jul 2006 (CEST)

I can refuse nothing to the women ;^)

I notice this page has been made over: pretty :). Thought I'd point out on my laptop the text is squished and occasionally overlapping (using internet explorer.) Any way this can be fixed? ~ Lark ascending 15:42, 4 Apr 2006 (CEST)

I edited this Main page and tested the overview with many browsers; Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Avant Browser, Opera. Even with my laptop under all these browsers, it works fine, except Opera which displays different and bigger fonts. May I suggest you to use a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels or higher... lower resolutions introduce uncorrect display. What kind of display problems do you notice with your laptop ?

Here is a screenshot I have got with my laptop under Internet Explorer (resolution 1024x768).
As you can see there is no display problem.

The best way is to create and upload a screenshot with your laptop, or send it to my email attached with a message.I can not correct the source code without more precisions from you. --Andriani

Ah, right. It does the same thing on my home computer, as well. Here's a screenshot (using internet explorer):

Maybe it's the font settings or something? ~ Lark ascending 00:49, 11 Jun 2006 (CEST)

I can understand what is the problem now...
You probably have an old version of Internet Explorer, because my up to date Internet Explorer doesn't have such wrong display.
Most of the browsers interpret correctly the simple html code but with small differences. With special tags, (I used the tag "small" to place the text with the right size) there sometimes is uncorrect interpretation, and Internet Explorer is well known to have display problems.
I will edit again the Main page tomorrow and hope every browsers will display correctly, even the most recalcitrant.

Ok so what is the point of these talk pages? --Geoff

I'm not sure, this is the first wiki I have ever participated in? --kim 22:10, 17 May 2004 (CEST)

I was wondering about a few things:

  • How do we get more people to contribute to this wiki? I have done some serious promotion around the globe, but still we are just a few editors. Is it worth trying to "force" people in here, or should we just wait and let people come, when they think they are ready?

Build it and they will come? Make a useful site and people will come. It might be a bit of work for us at the start, but we're slowly building up. Perhaps your theory of 'a book on othello' was not quite right.

Regarding the "theory of a book on othello": the reason I put the "book" word in the title, is that we are going to make a real book on othello in Denmark (sooner or later), and launching this wiki is one way to collect knowledge about othello for it. --kim 02:19, 20 May 2004 (CEST)

  • Do we need an "editorial policy"? Something like "don't delete other peoples work, try to add to it" or "talk before any major changes". At the moment, as we are just a few editors, and it shouldn't be nessesary, but will it be someday?

The whole idea of a wiki is you don't need all the enforced rules about what to do. With the diff feature it is easy to put back any text that gets removed. Editing pages in every way should be encouraged! Have a read of the many pages on wiki culture at The Original Wiki (http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiNature) OneMinuteWiki (http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?OneMinuteWiki) is a good one. --Geoff

Yes, your properly right. It just takes some time to get used to this "crazy" way of working, hopefully I will get the hank of it someday ;o) --kim 02:19, 20 May 2004 (CEST)

suggestion

I suggest an index of topics in the main page:

history - rules - strategy - ...

Jorge 19:54, 19 May 2004 (CEST)

Then go ahead! put them in! yay wikis! power to the people!

-- Geoff.

Your the editor Jorge. Go ahead, show us! --kim 02:19, 20 May 2004 (CEST)

I have another suggestion and I ask for some comments and support :-) Like I did with all the Belgian players: Some standard stuff for less known players (like mentioning their country and linking to the page with other players of their country) Also I noticed if they were Belgian Champion of ever participated the WOC. It's rather difficult for me to do all the players, but with a few volounteers it could work! Was is a good idea of me to do that or does it sucks? Let me know! Tom 19:05, 4 april 2005 (MET)

I was talking about something as this:

About Othello

Rules of Othello - History of Othello - Variants

Othello strategy

Openings - Midgame - Endgame - Othello patterns

Community

Federations - Clubs - Othello players

Internet

Othello servers - Othello forums

Computer

Othello programs - Othello databases

It's incomplete; this is only a stub, but here all are editors and you will complete and improve it : ) Jorge 11:00, 20 May 2004 (CEST)

I took the freedom to move it to the main othello page ;) /Henry

Thats the problem with these talk pages. They dont encourage editing the main pages enough.

--Geoff

Nice new look & feel on the wiki Kim!

Overall it is easier to find editing pages and it's easier to read with this font/color set.

Two things I would like to changed though... On the main page the table with the index would look better without the dotted/dashed frames. If it is possible to change this in the style sheets it would be good, otherwise we can rewrite the table.

It is done .Bintsa Andriani

The links that goes to external sites should in my opinion open in a new window, i hope it is easily done without changing every page with an external link.

- Henry

Don't most pages opens in new windows? I'm afraid I havent got a clue in this case, but I think there is a syntac to make a link open in a new window, right?
