Patterns
From The Othello Wiki Book Project
Othello is a game that is strongly connected to pattern recognition. Learning to recognize the different patterns and the correct moves to them in different situations is a key to rapidly become a good player. You don't need to have a strong pattern memory to become a good player, but it helps ( the strongest computer programs use pattern recognition).
Opening Patterns:
Midgame patterns:
After you have left the opening book and are "on your own" in deciding what move to make, you can win a lot of time and effort by learning certain patterns. These patterns help you to evaluate who is winning/loosing the game aswell as it can help you to avoid dangerous traps in the endgame. Finally and maybe most important these patterns can help you to evaluate the tempo difference between black and white.

Edge patterns:
These patterns are the easiest to learn since they involve the fewest number of discs. Edge patterns are first of all used to know how to play an edge depending on if you want to take the edge or give it to your opponent. Secondly it involves the possible size of the edge (4,5 or 6 discs), giving you different Edge Configurations.

Endgame patterns:
These patterns mostly involve parity, but also swindles. These are crucial to learn since you save alot of time from counting discs if you know the patterns to glory.
