History of Othello

From The Othello Wiki Book Project

Othello is a relatively young game, but it still counts as one of the classic board games. Othello is played all over the world and each year there is a World Championship tournament.

Othello was created in 1972 by Goro Hasegawa. The game was based upon the game of reversi that Lewis Waterman created in 1876.

Goro Hasegawa developed the game and created simpler rules and started to sell the game. The name of Othello comes from the classical play made by William Shakespeare because of the fight for the girl Desdemona between Othello (Moor, a coloured person) and the white Portuguese De Jago (spelt Iago in most European languages).
